<text>João Evangelista de Abreu was a Portuguese military engineer part of a generation of railway engineers who, from the mid-19th century, marked the History of Construction in Portugal. Born on December 24, 1827, in Castelo Brancom, he was the son of a well-known surgeon, Manuel Mendes de Abreu. He joined the Civil War of Patuleia between 1846 and 1847. He studied at the University of Coimbra, where he completed a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1850, and at the Army School, graduating in military engineering in 1854. Between 1852 and 1853 he was a lens in the Liceu Nacional de Lisboa, where he taught geometry and mechanics applied to the arts. Between 1853 and 1854 he oversaw the courses of Railways and Roads and Architecture, Bridges, Inland Navigation and Ports at the Army School.<br /><br />In 1856 he started the engineering studies at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, in Paris. In 1857, when he was still studying in the Parisian school, he did fieldwork in Bordeaux, Pau and Marseille, especially on railways. This period of his life allowed him to gain experience in this area, an achievement that would be useful years later in the construction of railways in Portugal. On June 16, 1859, he received his diploma from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. Upon arriving in Portugal, he was hired by the Ministry of Public Works, Commerce and Industry, having been director of the second inspection division of the Portuguese Railways. However, just over a year later, he was hired on the special recommendation of the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées by José de Salamanca Y Mayol, who was looking for qualified engineers to join his construction company, as Chief Engineer for the Construction of the Northern and Eastern Railways. Later, in 1865, he was appointed responsible for studying the railways to be built for the southern line, becoming, a year later, in 1866, director of studies for the crossing of the Tagus railroad. He was the engineer responsible for the design of the Santa Apolónia Station, in Lisbon, revised by the engineers Nicolas Lecrenier and Angel Arribas y Ugarte.<br /><br />He was also responsible for the first improvement project for the Port of Lisbon, specifically works in the Navy Arsenal, including the addition of the Arsenal dock and bridge. As an engineer, he also belonged to a group of engineers involved in the construction of urban infrastructure in order to improve the supply of gas or water and solve the problems of urban sanitation. João Evangelista de Abreu died at the early age of 41 in 1869.</text>
