<text>Ricardo Esquivel Teixeira Duarte was born on October 10, 1886, in Lisbon. Son of Joaquim Teotónio Teixeira Duarte and Maria da Conceição Teixeira Duarte, he married Maria José da Graça Teixeira Duarte, with whom he had three children. He graduated in civil engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). At the same time as he was practicing civil engineering, manifested through his interventions in the Port of Lisbon, in 1921 he founded a foundations and soundings company (Empresa de Sondagens e Fundações Teixeira Duarte, Lda), which later became Teixeira Duarte SA.

He was president of the Engineering Section of the Engineers Association, integrating the Corporate Chamber. In this context, he represented the construction companies during the IV legislature, between 1945 and 1949. From this period, it stands out his opinion on the Port of Lisbon, reflected in the text Melhoramentos no Porto de Lisboa. In the V legislature, he continued his work on the 9th section of construction and building materials, adding the intervention in the 8th section of electricity and fuels, in the 11th section of transport and tourism and in the 23rd section of public works and communications. In the framework of these responsibilities, he also wrote his opinions on different topics, present in the texts Conservação dos Edifícios Escolares, Regulamento Geral de Edificações and Estatuto do Turismo. During this period, he served as president of the Board of Directors of the Engineers Association, appointed for the three-year period 1950-52 and succeeding Belard da Fonseca.

During his tenure as president, Ricardo Teixeira Duarte dealt with some obstacles, namely the growing unemployment of engineers and the first symptoms of a unanimous division of engineers. However, his leadership is also highlighted by the positive performance of the different sections, increasing its initiative capacity. It was also during his term that the publication of the Boletim da Ordem dos Engenheiros began, with the first issue published in January 1951. On January 15, 1952, Teixeira Duarte wrote to the Board of Directors stating that he no longer had the conditions to continue commanding the destinies of the Association, ending functions on July 21 of the same year.

Other milestones of his political-administrative career are manifested, for example, by integrating, as a technician, in the Physiocratic Services of the Ministry of Agriculture. He was also chief engineer of the Roads Direction of the Faro District and, finally, vowel of the High Council of Public Works. Ricardo Esquivel Teixeira Duarte died in 1959.</text>

<text>Manuel António da Mota was born on June 8, 1913, in Codeçoso, on the council of Celorico de Basto. He came from a humble family dedicated to agriculture. He married Maria Amália Guedes Queiroz de Vasconcelos in 1946, resulting from this marriage four children, Maria Manuela, Maria Teresa, Antonio and Maria Paula. After completing his primary education, due to his father inability to continue working, he started to manage the family farms. Determined to define his own life, in 1930 he began working as a pointer in a construction company. Years later he would become general manager and manager, starting his way in the field of entrepreneurship and construction.<br /><br />The following steps were made with family members. With Joaquim Fonseca, his brother-in-law, and Joaquim Pereira da Silva, he creates the company “Industrias Reunidas do Tâmega”, which acquires a sawmill company in Amarante dedicated to the extraction of bagasse oils. However, in 1946, he founded with Joaquim Fonseca and their brothers a new construction company, “Construtora do Tâmega”. Days later it was the turn of "Mota &amp; Company". With a difference of 15 days, these two companies were founded. The partners were the same, with slight changes, since in the case of “Mota &amp; Companhia” Manuel António da Mota was a majority partner followed by the partners Joaquim Fonseca and Virgílio Martins Ribeiro. They were two families, Mota and Fonseca. They had different goals. The "Construtora do Tâmega" to do public works and construction and the "Mota &amp; Company" to dedicate to forest and agricultural exploitation. With the creation of the two companies, the first went to work in Portugal and the second in Angola.<br /><br />He went to Angola and settled there. He allowed the company to always be seen as an Angolan company, without problems with the government or with the liberation movements. At the time of Angola's independence, it was one of the few groups that continued to work there. The difficulties remained during this period, as the war problems and political and social upheavals made most of Mota &amp; Companhia's partners want to leave the Angolan market. Manuel António da Mota held his ground and, buying the shares of the other partners, rebuilt the company and restarted from scratch in the mid-1970s. In this country, he left his mark, through the company, in works such as Luanda Airport and Luso-Henrique de Carvalho road. This decade is also remembered by the return to Portugal for the Lucefecit dam project.<br /><br />In 1977, the year in which Manuel António da Mota and his children acquired almost all the capital of “Mota &amp; Companhia”, the company won the important public tender for the regularization of Baixo Mondego. Mota &amp; Companhia became a public limited company in 1987, launching that year a public offer to sell part of its capital. Before he died, the founder of the company distributed the shareholder positions among his children, leaving the position of majority shareholder to his son Antonio. In 1982, he was awarded the Order of Agricultural and Industrial Merit, in recognition of his hard work as a businessman working for the development of Portugal. In 1995, when the company was growing and becoming increasingly international, Manuel António da Mota died on August 21, leaving a legacy in the history of construction and public works in Portugal and abroad.</text>

<text>José de Queirós Vaz Guedes was born on June 17, 1902, in Santarém. In 1929 he married Maria de Lurdes de Vasconcelos and Sá Guerreiro Nuno, having six children, Maria Augusta, Maria Amalia, João, Maria Clara, José and Nuno. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. However, his career was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, having founded one of the most important public works and construction companies in Portugal.<br /><br />He gained great financial autonomy on an individual level with the construction of the Lisboa-Caxias highway. As an engineer he directed many other works such as Magos Dam and continued, even after founding a construction company, to oversee various projects, such as Castelo de Bode Dam or even the Cabril Dam. At the age of 39, in 1947, he founded the company "Sociedade de Empreitadas Moniz da Maia, Duarte &amp; Vaz Guedes, Lda.", together with Bernardo Ernesto Moniz da Maia. This was a smart move as a process of public investment began in Portugal as part of the economic recovery after World War II. They created the company so that they could compete for the Castelo de Bode Dam contest, a work that they would eventually win and that became the company's first major construction. For several years, Dams were the company's specialty, having subsequently extended this field to bridges, viaducts and other road and rail infrastructure. In 1952, the company undergoes several structural changes, changing its name to “Moniz da Maia &amp; Vaz Guedes, Lda.”. In 1965, the company becomes a public limited company and in 1970 it is fully controlled by the Vaz Guedes family, which changes the company name to "Sociedade de Empreitadas Somague, S.A.R.L.".<br /><br />He was a member of the Governing Bodies of the Order of Engineers, in whose capacity he was a member of the Corporate Chamber during the IV legislature, between 1953 and 1957. During that period, he belonged to the XII section of administrative interests, particularly to the fourth subsection of Public Works and Communication. He drafted several proposals, including the Junta Antónoma das Estradas Financing Plan for the period of 1956 to 1970, the reorganization of the Junta Antónoma of Porto and Aveiro, the regulation of the exercise of Public Works contractor, the second part of the Gafanha colonization project and the legal regime for the works of “Fomento Hidroagrícola”. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Regional Association of Civil Construction and Public Works, returning to the Corporate Chamber as the employer's representative, between 1963 and 1965. In this period, he belonged to section V, specifically the second subsection of Construction, Glass and Ceramics. This time he also drafted several proposals, including the extension to the private construction industry of the disciplinary measures applicable to public works contractors and the project of the Interim Development Plan for the years 1965 to 1967, both on the Continent and in the islands.</text>

<text>António de Resende Valadas Fernandes was born on March 29, 1927, in Lisbon. He was one of the most important and most successful entrepreneurs in the construction sector in Portugal. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). He joined as partner, together with Simões Cúcio, at Engil, in 1953, a year after the foundation of the construction company by Fernando José Saraiva and António Lopes de Almeida. He led to a refoundation of the company, being for four decades responsible for the presidency of the company.<br /><br />In 1978, the engineer started Engil's internationalization project in Venezuela. The contractor partnered with Caracas-based company <em>Retosa</em>, which allowed it to build several factories and, for example, Guri Dam. However, a less favorable economic environment conditioned this same internationalization, causing the process to be interrupted and only resumed years later. Engil reached a new milestone in its life in 1987, the year that Valadas Fernandes decided to create Engil SGPS. In 1989, Engil entered in Angola, in 1993 in Mozambique, in 1994 in Germany and in 1996 in Peru. Finally, in 2000, after the public takeover bid launched by the Mota family, which led to the creation of Mota-Engil, Valadas Fernandes left Engil.<br /><br />He served as chairman of the Advisory Board and Chairman of the Assembly, first from 1985 to 1987 and then from 1991 to 1993, of the Associação Nacional de Empreiteiros de Obras Públicas (ANEOP) and was a member of the general board of the Mário Soares Foundation. In his political career he also held positions of great importance. He was a member of the board of the Grémio Regional dos Industriais de Construção Civil e Obras Públicas do Sul, in which he was a member of the Corporate Chamber, representing the employers. He was also the vice-chairman of the Secção de Construção, Vidro e Cerâmica da Corporação da Indústria. At last, he was deputy to the Director General of Development of the Ministério do Ultramar, having participated in the X and XI legislatures in the industry section. António Valadas Fernandes died on July 22, 2009.</text>

<text>Amadeu Gaudêncio was born on April 4, 1889, in the village of Pederneira, Nazaré. He was the son of Joaquim Gaudêncio and Maria da Conceição and married twice, having only descendents from the marriage with Claudina de Almeida Henriques, a daughter, Maria da Conceição Gaudêncio. He grew up until his was 18 years old in Nazaré, where he acquired 4th grade education and started working as a bricklayer. At this age, he moved to Lisbon to study overnight at the Escola Industrial Machado de Castro. He finished the course of Public Works Builders, obtaining the degree of Civil Builder. He began working on his own behalf, “Amadeu Gaudêncio – Construção Civil”, but in 1935 he founded the “Sociedade de Construções Amadeu Gaudêncio”. His company was responsible for a number of buildings of major importance to the country, including schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, museums, religious facilities and urban buildings. These include Casa da Moeda, Santa Maria Hospital, Nossa Senhora de Fátima Church, São João Hospital, Headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, the French Lyceum and Café Portugal.

He was also concerned with the political course of the country. Already before October 5, 1910, Amadeu Gaudencio proclaimed himself a convinced Republican, defender of democratic values, tolerance and solidarity. He belonged to Freemasonry, beginning at the Cândido dos Reis Lodgem, in Lisbon, in 1930, belonging after to other stores, such as the Simpatia e União Lodge, also in Lisbon. In his struggle for democracy and against fascism, he was praised by Mário Soares in his work “Portugal amordaçado”. Amadeu Gaudêncio always showed great concern for the socio-cultural fabric of the country, especially from his place of origin, Nazaré. He undertook various endeavours for the development of his homeland and the local population. In 1960, he contributed with 500,000 escudos to the construction of a school canteen for disadvantaged children. In 1968 he donated to the State a building for the creation of the Dr. Joaquim Manso Museum. Finally, in 1972 he donated 2500 contos for the construction of a secondary technical school, which was the origin of the construction of the Preparatory School of Nazaré, now E. B. 2,3 Amadeu Gaudêncio, in his honor.

In life he was also honored by various institutions. The Church named him, after the works in the Nunciatura Palace, Knight of S. Silvestre. He was honored by the state in 1968 with the degree of commendador of the Ordem de Benemerência. The Society that he founded, as a tribute, created a school award with his name, at Instituto Superior Técnico, with the aim of rewarding the finalists of the Civil Engineering degree, in order to promote the improvement and research of the science and technique of building construction. He died on October 13, 1980 at the age of 91 but remained active until age 85.</text>

Graduated in civil engineering at the Faculdade de Engenharia of the Universidade do Porto, he was a man interested in the conjectural themes of the country and was often present in the intellectual gatherings on Porto cafes. He started by founding the company “J. Praça e M. Godinho – Engenheiros Civis (UP) e H. Peres e L. Soares – Engenheiros Eletrotécnicos e Mecânicos (UP)”, together with Manuel Godinho, Luís Soares and Henrique Peres. One of the fist construction works of this company was the headquarters building of the newspaper "O Comércio do Porto", built between 1927 and 1930 and whose project was made by Rogério de Azevedo. José Praça and the other founders made the calculations of reinforced concrete and the roof structures of this building. Under the purview of this company, some other works we’re made by him and his colleagues, such as the Chapel of La Salette, from the architect Correia da Silva, and the Lyceum Rodrigues de Freitas, from the architect Marques da Silva. <br /><br />In 1932 José Praça, together with Manuel Godinho and Luís Soares, founded OPCA, Obras Públicas e Cimento Armado, S.A., this time without Engineer Henrique Peres, since he already worked for the Carris company. The three are the authors of numerous projects developed throughout the life of this company, including the Trofa Bridge, from 1932, the Viana do Castelo Harbor Building, designed by the architect Rogério de Azevedo and built between 1932. and 1934, the Building for the Fish Exchange, by the architect Januário Godinho and built in 1939, and the reconstruction of the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, in Guimarães. Jose Praça passed away in 1952.</text>

<text>Manuel António Godinho de Almeida was born in 1919 in the parish of Válega, in Ovar. He was the son of António Godinho de Almeida and Albina de Jesus Lopes Godinho and brother of Januário, João, Martim, Ana Amélia and Maria Nazaré Godinho de Almeida. He married Maria Angelina de Jesus Horta Leite Godinho de Almeida, with whom he had a daughter, Maria Manuela Leite Godinho de Almeida. He built or guided some of the main reinforced concrete works carried out in Portugal during the twentieth century. As a student, he attended the Espírito Santo College in Braga and the Porto Academic School, where he completed the high school. Graduating with a high degree in Mathematics from the Faculdade de Ciências of the Universidade do Porto, he would later enroll in the Faculdade de Engenharia of the same University to complete Civil Engineering. Due to his dynamism and liberal spirit, during this period he was head of the Academic Association of the University and other student organizations.<br /><br />He began his professional life as a teacher at the Alexandre Herculano High School in Porto, having then, together with the painter António Coita and engineer José Praça, founded the “Escola Normal de Desenho”. Later, and giving in to his entrepreneurial spirit, he devoted himself to the construction sector, having been a partner and administrator of several companies, some of them leading companies in the country. He started by founding the company “J. Praça e M. Godinho – Engenheiros Civis (UP) e H. Peres e L. Soares – Engenheiros Eletrotécnicos e Mecânicos (UP)”, together with José Praça, Luís Soares and Henrique Peres. He founded other companies, such as Novopca, Constructores Associados, Lda, and ENO, Sociedade Constructores Reunidos, SARL. As an engineer and entrepreneur, he intervened in numerous important public works of the Portuguese 20th century, namely the construction of the Alcântara Refrigerator, the Bouça, Picote and Ponte da Régua dams, on the Douro River, the Lisbon Municipal Slaughterhouse, the Bridge over the Tagus, current 25 de Abril bridge, especially the earthmoving and construction of works of art from its access to the south, the Port of Lisbon and the Lisbon Metro. Manuel António Godinho de Almeida died on October 24, 1989 in Lisbon.</text>
