<text>Pedro Anselmo Braamcamp Freire Cid was born on January 19, 1925, in Lisbon. He was a Portuguese architect belonging to the generation of post-war modernist architects. He graduated from architecture in 1952 at the Escola de Belas Artes, in Lisbo. In 1948 he participated, still as an architecture student, in the 1st National Congress of Architecture, promoted by the Sindicato Nacional dos Arquitetos. He accumulated several important positions during his professional life. He worked at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he collaborated in the launch of the GAT (Gabinetes de Apoio Técnico). In 1978 he assumed the direction of the Montemor-o-Novo GAT, a position that would mark his reunion with the Alentejo territory and the popular architecture. Throughout his activity, he tried to honour the clear, clean and discreet architecture with great sense of economy of materials.

He was part of the renovation of the city of Lisbon in the 1950s, with important works. These include the Avenida Estados Unidos da América Housing Blocks, designed with João Vasconcelos Esteves and Manuel Laginha between 1955 and 1957, one of the first examples of the application of CIAM's theories to the urban layout of Lisbon, the Portugal Pavilion in the Brussels Universal Exhibition, between 1956 and 1958, the first major post-war architecture event, where the construction body, a sober volume of a continuous passage, was implanted in order to integrate the surroundings, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Museum and Headquarters Building, designed with Ruy Jervis Athouguia and Alberto Pessoa between 1959 and 1969, a housing development in Olaias, designed with Fernando Torres in 1963, and the Jean Monet Building in Lisbon, in 1974. Outside Lisbon, he also made some interventions, as is the case of the Cacela Sub-Regional Plan, in Vila Real de Santo António, in 1966.

He was awarded several times. On October 31, 1969, he was made officer of the Military Order of SantiIago da Espada. In 1956 he won the Municipal Prize for his work on Avenida Estados Unidos da América, alongside with Manuel Lajinha and João Vasconcelos Esteves. He won the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Architecture Prize in 1975 for the architectural ensemble consisting of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Headquarters, Gardens and Museum, with Ruy Jervis Athouguia, Alberto Pessoa, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Viana Barreto. Pedro Cid died in Lisbon in 1983, at the age of 58 years old.</text>

He was the son of Manuel Jervis d’Athouguia Ferreira Pinto Basto and his wife Emilia de Sequeira Manso Gomes Palma. He married Maria Domingas Cirilo de Carvalho Pepulim, with whom he had six children. He attended the Colégio Militar between 1927 and 1936, finishing his studies at the age of 19. He then went to the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon. In 1940 he requested a transfer to the Escola de Belas Artes in Porto, where he graduated architecture in 1944. In the northern city he was a student of Carlos Ramos and met with names such as João Anderson and his sister, the poetess Sophia de Mello Breyner e Anderson. He worked at Veloso de Reis Camelo's office and later with Filipe Nobre de Figueiredo and Jorge Segurado, where he resumed an important friendship, complicity and working relationship with Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez. Subsequently, he worked as a liberal professional but was also a collaborator at the Cascais Town Hall for 4 years, where he did important works such as the “Bairro dos Pobres” under the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Cascais. He was also an urban consultant at Montijo City Hall and Beja City Hall.

His work in Lisbon includes the "Bairro das Estacas", designed in partnership with Formosinho Sanchez and Maurício de Vasconcelos between 1949 and 1955, the first urban set in Lisbon with the principles of the Charter of Athens, the Primary Schools of the São Miguel neighborhood between 1949 and 1953, adapting the brise-soleil to the window in fulfillment, the Teixeira de Pascoaes School between 1956 and 1961, structured in a pavilion system according to volumes of great purity and poetic abstraction, the Padre António Vieira Secondary School between 1959 and 1964, the housing estate of Alvalade Square, the São Pedro de Abrantes Cineteatro of 1949, and the Infante Tower. His most important work is the headquarters and museum building of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, which he designed in partnership with architects Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa between 1959 and 1969. This project was the culmination of a modern speech, revealed in the rationalist principles of the organization of dry and abstract volumes.

Together with Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Viana Barreto, he won the 1975 Valmor Award for the architectural ensemble of the Calouste Gulbenkian Headquarters, Gardens and Museum. He had already won a prize at the 1960 São Paulo biennial for Alvalade's “Bairro das Estacas”. He used, during his lifetime, the title of 4th Viscount of Atouguia, attributed by the then Council of Nobility. On October 31, 1969, he was made Officer of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada. In December 2003, the Ordem dos Arquitetos organized at the Galveias Palace in Lisbon a retrospective exhibition of his work, integrated in the theme Architects of the Modern Generation. <text>Tomás Taveira was born in Lisbon on November 22, 1938. He comes from a humble family, workers from the Picheleira area of Lisbon. He started as a locksmith, but the beginning of his career as an architect happened only when he started working in the studios of Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Francisco da Conceição Silva, for whom he had a great admiration. He also worked as a designer for architects such as Francisco Keil do Amaral. In the 60's he attended architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes, in Lisbon. After graduation, he traveled to Boston, USA, where he completed a postgraduate degree in Regional and Urban Planning as part of her PhD programs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He created his own studio soon after graduating, in 1971. He divided his professional activity between urbanism, architecture and design, being a symbol on the postmodernism of Portuguese architecture, with mirrored buildings, bold and colourful geometric elements. Some of his most emblematic works are the socially-oriented urban complex in the former Zona J of Chelas, the Amoreiras commercial and residential complex, the Encosta das Olaias residential area, the headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, currently the Caixa Geral de Deposits, IADE Building (Faculdade de Design, Tecnologia e Comunicação), Palmela Village, Alvalade XXI Stadium, Aveiro Municipal Stadium, Leiria Municipal Stadium, Olaias Metro Station, Record Store and Factory Valentim de Carvalho, the Hotel da Balaia and the Castilho Building.

He was a professor at various institutions. In 1973, he began teaching at the Faculdade de Arquitectura of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, where he taught until September 2003, already a guest professor. He also taught at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and California State Politecnic University. He has also received several awards. In 1984 he received the Valmor Prize and the Municipal City of Lisbon Prize for the Olaias housing complex, the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Architecture Prize in 1993 for the Amoreiras Complex and the Valmor Prize Honorable Mention in 1994 for the headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino. He also wrote some important articles in several newspapers and magazines, such as "Domus", "Progressive Architecture", "A + U" and "Arquitectura Portuguesa", and also published some books, including the Estudo de Renovação Urbana na Área do Martim Moniz, which won the José de Figueiredo award of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. He was a member of the International Association of Art Critics (IAAC) and has left work not only all over Portugal, but also in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Macau, Angola and Cape Verde.</text>

<text>Pedro Kopke Pardal Monteiro was born in 1920. He was son of Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, known architect of the twentieth century and one of the most important Portuguese modernists, and Maria Luísa Vasques Corrêa Pardal Monteiro. He studied civil engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), which he ended in 1944. He spent the early years of his professional career in Mozambique, where his father's architectural imprint is still evident today, such as the Maputo Cathedral and the Casa Hillman.

Some of his outstanding works are the new Fábrica de Massas e Bolachas of the Beato industrial complex, the Fábrica de Sêmolas, the Philips Industrial Complex, the Fábrica Portuguesa de Artigos Elétricos, the Ritz Hotel, the Fábrica A Nacional, the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge, the Edifício Arantes e Oliveira do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil.

In 1966, together with António Pardal Monteiro, he decided to set up first at Largo de São Carlos and later on Rua Saraiva de Carvalho a studio with the material of his father, Porfírio Pardal Monteiro. The Atelier had a tripartite management of these two family members and the architect and Anselmo Fernandez.

Pedro Kopke Pardal Monteiro died in 1983 at the age of 63.</text>

<text>António Pardal Monteiro was born on December 31, 1928, in Pêro-Pinheiro, Sintra. Son of Basilio Pardal Monteiro, an industrialist of marbles and stonework and with whom had direct contact with the construction industry, and Adelina Baptista Pardal Monteiro. He was a well-known Portuguese architect, with a work of excellence, especially in the city of Lisbon. After high school at Liceu Camões, he joined the Escola de Belas Artes in the capital to study architecture, which he ended in 1950. He became known for completing and continuing the work of his uncle, Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, with whom he began working immediately after graduation, and who, after 1957, left his nephew the responsibility to continue his work.

His most well-known works include interventions at the Cidade Universitária de Lisboa, namely the Reitoria, the Faculdade de Letras and the Faculdade de Direito. Another project that is automatically associated with him is the Biblioteca Nacional, which saw for almost 50 years growing and renovating, having participated in the changes and adjustments introduced to the original project, as well as supporting the execution of practically all the work until its conclusion in 1969. It was at his suggestion that Daciano da Costa was entrusted with the interior arrangements of the General Reading Room, the director's premises and the amphitheater, the most emblematic spaces of the building. He was also in charge of the expansion and remodeling work of the Deposit Tower. His portfolio includes many other projects, namely the Edifcio Arantes and Oliveira Building of the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, the Instituto Nacional Dr. Ricardo Jorge, the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, the remodeling and expansion of the Instituto Superior Técnico, specifically the two towers of the complex. Among other interventions, António Pardal Monteiro was also involved in the stone conversion of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos between 1958 and 1960.

Teaching was another great passion of the architect, professor at the Faculdade de Arquitetura de Lisboa from 1976 to 1999, marking several generations of future professionals. António Pardal Monteiro received the title of Knight of the Order of Santiago da Espada, attributed for his contribution in the construction of the central buildings of the Cidade Universitária de Lisboa. He was also a member of the Associação dos Arquitetos Portugueses, the Sociedade Portuguesa de Acústica and the Comissão Nacional Portuguesa de Iluminação. He died on 17 November 2012, in Lisbon, at the age of 84 from a prolonged illness.</text>

<text>José Belard da Fonseca was born on August 2, 1889 in Chamusca, Santarém. He was the son of the 2nd Viscount of Santa Margarida, Coronel António Belard da Fonseca, of Spanish descent, and his wife Emilia Palyart Pedroso, of French descent. In 1931, he married Rosa Cancela Ferreira Tavares in Mogofores, Anadia. From their marriage two daughters were born, Maria Emilia Belard da Fonseca and Isabel Belard da Fonseca. In 1921, he graduated in civil engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), becoming, in the academic year 1920-1921, an assistant professor. It was not until 1942 that he came to the position of full professor. That same year he was elected director of the IST, a position he would hold until 1958. From that year he was vice-rector of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, where he remained until 1963. In the academic universe he was also assistant to the Industrial Institute of Lisbon, that would later become Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, between 1923 and 1924. He published several articles for specialized magazines and newspapers, namely on reinforced concrete construction, a specialty of his. Among many stand out Momentos flectores nas construcções hiperstálicas, Curso de Resistência de Materiais e Estabilidade das Construções and A Irrigação no Egipto. He directed the “Época Industrial” section of the A Época newspaper and was the director of the Técnica magazine.

He was responsible for numerous works of great importance to the country. He designed the structures of the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, the Palácio Ford, the Igreja de São Julião, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima, the Teatro Capitólio, the Monte Gordo Casino in Algarve, the Café Portugal, among others. Apart from the works where he intervened individually, Belard da Fonseca also has a large number of works in the name of his construction company, including the construction of the Porto do Funchal.

During his life he accumulated many positions, in addition to academic ones. He was a vowel, between 1926 and 1929, vice-president, between 1929 and 1932, and also chairman of the board of directors, current chairman of the Order of Engineers, between 1947 and 1950, of the Directorate of Portuguese Civil Engineers. He was also vice-president of the International Association of Bridges and Structures in 1954, being simultaneously chairman of the Portuguese commission, member of the Organizing Committee of the First National Congress of Civil Engineering in 1931 and chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Second National Congress of Civil Engineering in 1948. He was a member of the commissions responsible for regulating reinforced concrete construction between 1933 and 1935. He represented both the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Association of Civil Engineers abroad in Cairo, Brussels and Algiers. He was director of the Sociedade de Empreitadas e Trabalhos Hidráulicos and chairman of SECIL's Board of Directors. Following these administrative positions, he was a prosecutor for the Corporate Chamber as a representative of construction companies between 1935 and 1942.

In life he was honored with numerous titles. Commander of the Ordem Militar de Cristo of Portugal in 1936, Officer of the Great Decor of the Nile of Egypt in 1947, Commander of the Order of Dannebrog of Denmark in 1947, Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem of the Vatican or of the Holy See, Knight of the Order of Saint Sylvester Pope of the Vatican or Holy See and Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of West Germany in 1957, Grand Officer of the Ordem da Instrução Pública of Portugal in 1963 and Grand Officer of the Ordem de Benemerência of Portugal in 1969. <text>Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal was born in Chaves, in the Vila-Real district, on December 10, 1885. Son of Joaquim Maria Evangelista do Carvalhal and Maria do Carmo Carvalhal, he was an important Portuguese civil engineer. Among the projects that he intervened are the Faculdade de Letras, the Faculdade de Direito and the Reitoria of the Universidade de Lisboa, being him a member of the Administrative Commission of the New University Buildings. Also noteworthy are his interventions at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, where he did the study and calculation of the engineering project and construction contract, and at the Hospital de São João, in Porto.

However, one of his outstanding works is the fábrica de briquetes of Mina do Espadanal. The architectural and structural design of the factory was developed by the engineering office of Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal, similar to the design of volumes and elevations of the main body of the project of A Nacional factory, in Lisbon, by Pardal Monteiro, built almost simultaneously, between 1948 and 1952. This project is a unique work, due to its architectural quality and technological innovation in the construction of mining accessories in Portugal, whose uniqueness is due to the investment of important public economic and technical resources in the exploration of the Rio Maior lignite deposit as a strategic fuel reserve for the Lisbon region during World War II and post-war. The value of the architectural design of the fábrica de briquetes was recognized by the Order of Architects in inventing it in the Portuguese Architecture Survey of the 20th Century, held in 2006. Out of a total of 6112 nationally inventoried works, the Mina do Briquettes factory was one of 12 selected buildings in the municipality of Rio Maior.

He was a student at the Military College in Lisbon. One of the disciplines that pleased him most and became a hobby for the rest of his life was shooting. He was even awarded in several shooting events as alumno premiado. Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal died on August 4, 1972, at the age of 86, in Lisbon.</text>

Among them are the Faculdade de Letras of the Universidade de Lisboa and the amphitheaters of the Faculdade de Medicina of the Universidade do Porto. He also participated as an engineer in the construction at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon. His name is widely recognized at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), in Lisbon, where he was assistant from 1919 and full professor of Building Materials and Civil Constructions Subject from 1943 to 1962. The recruitment of full professors of civil engineering, since 1948, were made almost exclusively by public competition. Of the professors admitted after Bensaúde's withdrawal this one deserves special mention, mainly because of the professional activity developed outside the IST.

He is responsible for the writing of several articles, including Indicação geral e norma de cálculo da estrutura do novo Hospital Escolar de Lisboa, written in collaboration with Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal for the Revista da Ordem dos Engenheiros in 1944. In life he was honored with the Grau de Grande-Oficial on November 7, 1963. Manuel Guilherme Tavares Cardoso died in 1969.</text>

He was also the engineer responsible for other major works in the national context, such as Hospital de Santa Maria, Hospital Dona Estefânia and Escola Industrial e Comercial of Bragança.

He was also president of the Section of Economic Houses, one of the first initiatives of economic accommodation in Portugal. It was even in this program that the engineer launched Raúl Lino, defending to Duarte Pacheco, Minister of Works and Public and Communications, in 1934, that the architect was an expert in the rhetoric of the “Portuguese House”, a central issue for the years to come on the artistic representation of the dictatorship.

Still in life, he was awarded several decorations. The Degree of Grande-Oficial of Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, Oficial of Ordem Militar de Avis, Oficial of Ordem Militar de Santiago, Grande Oficial of Ordem Militar de Cristo and Comendador of Ordem da Instrução Pública. He also wrote some articles and works that remained for posterity, namely Algumas reflexões sobre o Ensino de Engenharia, on behalf of the National Electricity Company, with the collaboration of Fernando Ivo Gonçalves, Antonio Manuel Lebanon Monteiro, Carlos Portela, Diogo Almeida and Vasconcelos, Guido. dos Santos Rodrigues, José Augusto do Nascimento and José Maria de Quadros and Costa. Following his work at the head of the Economic Houses Section, he wrote Bairros Económicos. Fernando Galvão Jacôme de Castro died in Lisbon on June 13, 1964.</text>
