<text>Ruy Rebello de Andrade was born on March 15, 1923. He was a Portuguese architect, son of the well-known architect Guilherme Rebello de Andrade and nephew of Carlos Rebello de Andrade. As an architecture student at the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon, he attended the First National Architecture Congress, held in 1948, organized by the National Architects Union and chaired by architect Cottinelli Telmo. That same national meeting was attended by his family members, Carlos and Guilherme. With his father he developed one of the most emblematic works of his career, the reconstruction of the National Theater D. Maria II, in Lisbon, destroyed by the fire in December 1964. When his father died, in 1969, he fully assumed the reconstruction project, respecting, however, the general features of his father’s original project. The theatre reopened in 1978. Ruy Rebello de Andrade died on August 1, 1983.</text>

              <text>Guilherme de la Rocque Rebello de Andrade was born in 1891, in Lisbon. He was a well-known Portuguese architect, especially during the first half of the 20th century. He was the son of Bento Rebello de Andrade and his wife Maria Emília de la Rocque, of French descent. He graduated from the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon. His brother was Carlos Rebello de Andrade, with whom he shared the signature of several emblematic works in Portugal. Their partnership would last until 1950. Together, they were one of the most active Portuguese architects from the 1920s to the 1940s. With the affirmation and rise of the modern movement, both brothers were put “out of the picture”, especially when considered the artistic, ideological and political motivations, or, in other words, their “traditionalist”, “nationalist” and “regime” architecture. Several discussions have animated the reflection on these two brothers and their role in 20th century Portuguese architecture, often ignored by a partial historiography.

His career went through not only the liberal exercise of his profession, but also the Lisbon City Council, the General Directorate of National Buildings between 1932 and 1934 and several private studios. The work of the two brothers is, according to Luís Soares Carneiro, divided into four periods, the first, in the early twenties, marked by small works, houses and annexes, the second marked by the victories in the competitions of the pavilions of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro and Seville, gaining some relevance in the national context, the third associated with the public works of the Estado Novo, a framework on which several architects were called to follow the dynamics of the new regime, and a fourth period already off the stage of the public sphere where the two brothers went on different ways, working each of them in a different direction. Therefore, his work is quite extensive, with most of his projects being signed together with his brother. Noteworthy are the Pavilion of Industries at the Exhibition of the Centenary of Brazil in 1922, later adapted to the Pavilion Carlos Lopes at Parque Eduardo VII, the Pavilion of Portugal at the Exhibition of Seville in 1929, the Naval School of Alfeite in 1928, the National Museum of Ancient Art in 1932, the reconstruction of the National Palace of Queluz after the fire of 1934, the Sacavém Agronomic Station in 1938, the Luminous Fountain in the Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques in 1938, the house on Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, which won them the Valmor Prize in 1939 and the Embassy of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro in 1946. He also signed several projects alone, namely the 1952 Nossa Senhora da Piedade neighborhood, of single-family houses and rural architecture, the reconstruction of the National Theater of D. Maria II in 1964, the Monument to the Dead of the Great War in 1931 and the restoration works of the National Theater of São Carlos in 1940. Contrary to the stereotype that pursued their career the architecture of the two brothers, although closely linked to the regime, always oscillated between modern architecture and traditionalist architecture, having played a central role, as was clear, in the Public Works policy of the Estado Novo.

In addition to the Valmor Prize, already mentioned, Guilherme Rebello de Andrade was also awarded twice. On May 10, 1929, he was made an Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada, associated with the Pavilion of Portugal project. In turn, on May 23, 1932 he was made Commander of the Military Order of Christ, associated with the Monument to the Deaths of the Great War. At the time of his death he was dedicated to the project for the reconstruction of the National Theater D. Maria II, in Lisbon. This work confirmed the end of the partnership between the two brothers, which had been waning throughout the 50s and 60s, precisely because they adopted new directions. Carlos started working with his nephew and Guilherme with his son, Ruy Rebello de Andrade, an architect who continued his father's work in rebuilding the Theater. Guilherme Rebello de Andrade died in 1969, he was 78 years old.</text>

              <text>António Barreiros Ferreira was born in Lisbon, on September 26, 1952. His education began in 1969 with the Artistic Training course at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes. In 1975, he took a course in Urban and Regional Studies at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Politicas. However, it was in 1977 that the well-known Portuguese architect finally graduated in architecture from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon. During the period in which he was studying for the profession of architect, António Barreiros Ferreira was a fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation from 1971 to 1976. He quickly climbed into the academic world, having started teaching in 1978. He started at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon, where he taught until 1983, followed by the Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa until 1993 and, finally, at the Instituto Superior Técnico since 1998. In this educational establishment he helped to form the new Degree in Architecture. He was responsible for the chairs of Architecture Design I, II and III until 2006 and Architecture Design IV and V until 2013. In 2013 he became Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico.

Regarding his activity as an architect, he was involved with various personalities in the world of architecture, namely with Júlio Sottomayor Neuparth, Maurício de Vasconcellos, Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, António Nunes de Almeida, Manuel Sheppard da Cruz, Arsénio Raposo Cordeiro, Luís Jorge Bruno Soares and João Miguel Pinto Teixeira. He was head of the “Raposo Cordeiro Lda.” office from 1984 to 1991, the year he decided to create the “TETRACTYS Arquitectos” office. It was in this atelier that he designed several references of the contemporary Portuguese architecture, namely Torre do Tombo, the new headquarters of the Lisbon Industrial Fair, the headquarters of Caixa Geral de Depósitos or the Pala de Alcântara, already in the new millennium.

During his career he has received several awards and his work has been recognized by several national and international publications, namely in "World Architecture", "Vitrea" and "Arquitectura Portuguesa". He also participated in several renowned exhibitions in architecture, such as Expo 2000. He was even decorated, receiving the degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit, at the time awarded by the President of the Republic on July 9, 1999.</text>

              <text>
Júlio Ferry do Espírito Santo Borges was born in Lisbon in 1922. He was a well-known Portuguese civil engineer. Borges completed Civil Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico in 1945, with the highest grade of his year. Before finishing the bachelor, in 1943, he entered the Civil Engineering Studies Center, where he would work until 1947. In the year of his graduation, he began his academic career, having been an assistant until 1947 in the subject of “General Mathematics” at Instituto Superior Técnico. In 1948 he went to Sweden to do an internship at the Stockholm Cement and Concrete Institute, returning in 1949. In 1954 he presented the famous dissertation on Dimensioning Structures to LNEC (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil), in order to obtain the researcher degree. However, less than a year later, in 1955 he was appointed member of the Superior Council for Public Works. His biggest mark in this position concerns his participation in the Commissions for the preparation of the various safety regulations in the construction of structures, namely the Regulamento de Solicitações em Edifícios e Pontes (RSEP), the Regulamento de Segurança e Ações para Estruturas de Edifícios e Pontes (RSA), the Regulamento de Estruturas de Betão Armado (REBA) and the Regulamento de Estruturas de Betão Armado e Pré-Esforçado (REBAB).

At LNEC, in 1962, he created the country's first Scientific Calculation Center, promoting also the study and debate on this theme at the international symposiums. The structural analysis methods he developed were used by the designers of the Sobre do Tejo Bridge, having himself been a consultant to the Office of the same bridge. He was the author of several projects of renowned structures, namely the buildings of the fishing port, the Palace of Justice, the National Theater and the headquarters of Banco Espírito Santo. His work Structural Safety, whose first edition is from 1968, is a major reference in this nuclear field of structural engineering, adopted in several foreign universities. The work Earthquake Engineering, published in 1969, in collaboration with LNEC Researcher Artur Ravara, is also considered a turning point in this field of engineering. He defended the need for a safety culture and the application of social sciences to the construction sector, suggesting that the ethical component of engineering should be considered as a new area of research, particularly in its relation to the protection of the environment, the conservation of natural resources, the equitable distribution of costs, benefits and risks, and the application of technological advances. His publication Human Motivations, Ethics and Justice translates specifically this message.

He was a rapporteur and chairman of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety since its founding in 1972, and later became honorary chairman. He chaired the Euro-International Concrete Committee from 1977 to 1983, having also been elected as an honorary president. He was a founding member of several Portuguese scientific associations. He served as chairman of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Seismic Engineering, of the Portuguese Pre-Stressed Group, currently the Portuguese Group of Structural Concrete, and of the Portuguese Group of Structural Engineering, currently the Portuguese Association of Structural Engineering. He was a corresponding member of the Lisbon Science Academy, an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), an honorary member of the Italian Association for Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete (AICAP), and a rapporteur of the Joint Structural Safety Committee (JCSS), since its creation in 1972 until 1985, having subsequently been elected president of the plenary and honorary president. He was director and vice president of the International Association of Seismic Engineering, he was vice president of the European Association of Seismic Engineering, he was a member of the Governing Board and the Programming Commission of the International Construction Council, he was member of the General Council of the International Meeting of Materials and Structures Testing Laboratories, he was vice-president of the International Federation of Pre-stressed, and he was vice-president of I Commission of the International Association of Bridges and Structures, having also been appointed an honorary member of this Association in 1989. He was President of the Portuguese Section of the Societé des Ingénieurs et Scientifiques of France. He worked as an UNESCO consultant on seismic engineering and general disaster protection policy. He was a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Structures, the International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics and the Structural Safety Magazine. From 1986 to 1990 he was a member of the Commission for the Development of Science and Technology in Europe and the Commission of the European Communities. In 1990 he was appointed national representative on the Technical Committee TC1 - Mechanical Resistance and Stability of Constructions. A year later, finally, he was elected president of the Portuguese Commission CT115 - Structural Eurocodes.

Both nationally and internationally, he was conductor of several chairs. Abroad, he was the conductor of Seismic Engineering at the International Institute of Seismic Engineering, in Bergamo, between 1967 and 1971, of Structural Safety at the University of Berkeley in 1970 and at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in 1975, and of Structural Safety Applied to Seismic Engineering at the International Institute of Seismology and Seismic Engineering in Tokyo in 1971. In 1982 he was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris-Causa by the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. In 1989 he would be awarded the same degree again by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and, finally, in 1991, he was Doctor Honoris-Causa by the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. He was Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, where he taught the chairs of Structural Reliability, Quality Assurance and Actions in Structures. Júlio Ferry Borges was awarded the Order of Santiago da Espada in Portugal, the Order of Cruzeiro do Sul in Brazil and the National Order of Merit in France. He won the Merit prize of the International Association of Bridges and Structures in 1985. In 1995, posthumously, he was awarded the decoration of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. In 1998 the Portuguese Group of Structural Engineering created the “Ferry Borges Award”. Júlio Ferry Borges passed away in September 1995.
</text>

              <text>João Henrique de Mello Breyner Andresen was born in Porto on December 13, 1920. He was a well-known Portuguese architect, brother of Sophia de Melo Breyner, a prestigious writer, Tomás de Melo Breyner Andresen and Gustavo António de Melo Breyner Andresen and son of João Henrique Andresen and Maria Amelia de Melo Breyner. He is has Danish descendance from the paternal side and, from the maternal side, of the 4th Earl of Mafra. He spent all his childhood and youth in the city of Porto and married Maria Margarida de Mendoça de Sousa. In 1939 he started to study architecture at the Escola de Belas Artes of Porto, where he graduated in 1948. He quickly grew up in the academic sector and in 1948 he served as assistant professor in the chair of “Urbanization Projects and Works”. A little over a decade later, in 1961, he won the contest for effective teacher, with the dissertation “For a more human city”.

His professional career is very prestigious. He associated himself several times with other architects in different projects, namely with Cristiano Moreira and Januário Godinho. His work is, in turn, greatly influenced by the signs of time, especially by post-war international currents. His main influences were architects such as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Siegfried Giedion. From them he withdrew elements of the international modernist architecture and the vernacular architecture, absorbing also, especially from Breuer, the logic of the binuclear house, with a day space and a night space. In his portfolio we can find these marks, highlighting here the dwellings in Lamego, Carreço, Valongo and Caxias in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the project for the “Canadian House of the Future” in 1954, the Pousada de Valença, built between 1954 and 1963, a controversial work caused by the architect's modernist clash with the client’s traditionalist and picturesque environment request, the project for the Infante D. Henrique Monument contest in 1957, together with the sculptor Salvador Barata Feyo and the painter Júlio Resende, the Viana do Castelo Market, the project for the Calouste Gulbenkian Building of the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) in 1958, the English Club of Porto and the Lisbon Palace of Justice in 1962, the preliminary project for the Câmara de Viana do Castelo and the headquarters of Sogrape in 1964. He was also quite prominent in the area of urbanism, having made urbanization plans for Sernancelhe in 1951 and Penacova in 1952, development lanes for Quinta da Marinha in Cascais in 1961, Ponta da Piedade in Lagos in 1963 and Reis Magos in Madeira in 1964, and detailed plans for the Ramalde Welfare Federation in Porto in 1949, Bragança in 1955 and Cabo Mor in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1974.

His participation in international contests, such as the “Canadian House of the Future”, was instrumental in helping to re-launch Portuguese architecture into the international landscape and production. He was a member of the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) and was one of the founders of the Organization of Modern Architects (ODAM) in Porto. João Anderson died at the age of 46 in Porto, on June 24, 1967.</text>

              <text>Januário Godinho de Almeida was born on August 16, 1910, in Ovar. He was the son of António Godinho de Almeida and Albina de Jesus Lopes Godinho. In 1925 he began his studies in architecture, having graduated in 1930 from the Escola de Belas Artes of Porto. During his career at this school, he developed a relation of mentorship with the well-known architect Marques da Silva. Eleven years later he obtained the degree of Architect with the study for the Parque-Vidago Hotel. His first years of activity, in the 1930s, are associated with Rogério de Azevedo's studio, where he worked for a period of time. His career and activity comes at a crucial moment in national architecture, a period of development of second modern movement. It was precisely from this historic moment that emerged names like Francisco Keil do Amaral, Arménio Lousa and Alfredo Viana da Silva. As well as the names mentioned behind, Godinho had concerns that integrate him in this architectural current, namely the interpretation of the place, the accessibility, the relationship between the landscape and the interior space and the choice of materials for the construction. Moreover, he always tried to follow a logic known as critical regionalism, favouring a symbiosis between modernity and tradition.

One of the works that most marks his career is the Cávado Hydroelectric Complex. A project that involved dams, technical, social and tourism buildings. The development of this partnership appears in a context of multidisciplinary activities, where, in this case, the architect worked in direct association with the contractors and the respective technical services. His portfolio is quite extensive. In the 1930h there are some emblematic projects, namely the Massarelos Refrigerated Warehouses. In the 1940s, it is possible to highlight the National High School of Viana do Castelo, currently Santa Maria Maior Highschool, the Economic District of Calhabé, in Coimbra, and the Urbanization Plan of the Sanatorio do Caramulo. The 1950s and 1960s are a particular important period in his career, having devolped the Cávado Hydroelectric Complex, the Tomar Courthouse, the Funchal Courthouse, the Ovar Courthouse, the Ovar Market, the Amarante Market, the Portuguese Electric Union Station, the Calouste Gulbenkian Building of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), the Lisbon Palace of Justice, these last two in association with João Andresen, and the Urbanization Plan for Amarante’s downtown and the city of Coimbra. His connection to the OPCA company was also evident during his early career, having as brother one of the founders. For this company he made, for example, the Massarelos Refrigerated Warehouses.

A man also linked to the theoretical debate, he participated in the exhibition "Contemporary Portuguese Architecture" in 1958. His work was exhibited in the gallery of the Ovar Municipal Library, having as its main organizer the Order of Architects. Januário Godinho died in Porto in 1990.</text>

              <text>Vittorio Gregotti was born in Novara, Italy, on August 10, 1927. He is a well-known Italian architect, mainly related to the area of urbanism. In 1947 he began his career in the world of architecture, having worked for a period of time at the Perret Brothers' studio. In 1952 he graduated in architecture by the Politecnico di Milano. His first job as an architect was in the studio of the acclaimed group BBPR, where Ernest Nathan Rogers played a key role as his mentor. With him he participated in 1951 at the Triennale of Milan and later at the International Congress of Modern Architecture in London. Other figures, of which he was close, contributed to influence his architectural style, namely Le Corbusier, Ove Arup, Cornelis Van Eesteren, Gropius and Henry Van De Velde.

Much of his activity comes from two specific phases of his life, the first associated with the studio he created with Ludovico Meneghetti and Giotto Stoppino, from which much of his work departed between 1953 and 1968, and the second associated with the studio he founded with Pier Luigi Cerri, Pier Luigi Nicolin, Hiromichi Matsui and Bruno Vigano in 1974, Gregotti Associati International, where he designed some of the greatest architectural references of his career, spread from its headquarters in Milan in more than twenty countries. His activity is associated with reaction to the modernist movement, having dubbed the stream of "Italian Rationalism", of which the Novara 1960 office building is a prime example. He was the driver of Palermo's controversial ZEN district project, an initiative that ultimately failed by involving the Italian mafia. Among his best-known works are the Department of Sciences of the University of Palermo in 1969, the University of Calabria Campus in 1973, the General Plan of Arezzo City in 1984, the Barcelona Olympic Stadium in 1984, the Unique Hospital of Valdarno in 1987, the Belém Cultural Center in 1988, the Luigi Ferraris Municipal Stadium in 1990, the Potsdamer Platz in 1991, the plan for a root city in Ukraine near the Black Sea in 1992, the Arcimboldi Theater in 1997, the Beijing National Grand Theater in 1997, the plan for a new residential neighborhood in the Pujiang area in 2002 and the Aix-en-Provence Opera house in 2003, among many others.

He has written several articles and has published several works. He had an important collaboration with the historical magazine “Casabella”, directed by his mentor Ernest Nathan Rogers. He became director of the magazine in 1982, a role he played until 1996. He was also editor and director of other magazines related to architecture. He wrote works such as The Territory of Architecture, Visible City, Internal Architecture, Identity and Crisis of European Architecture, and Seventeen Architectural Letters. His works and activity contributed in large measure to the debate on the craft of architecture and more specifically on the modern movement that emerged in the 1960s.

He was a professor at the Venice University Institute of Architecture, where he held his jubilee, and has taught at other universities such as Milan, Palermo, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Lausanne, Harvard, Philadelphia, Princeton, Cambridge and MIT. He received several distinctions and awards, including the 13th Triennial Milan Grand Prix International. He directed the visual arts and architecture section of the Venice Biennale between 1974 and 1976. He was awarded the degree of Doctor honoris causa by the Prague Polytechnic Institute in 1996, by the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest in 1999 and by the University of Porto in 2003. He is a member of the St. Luca Academy since 1976, the Brera Academy since 1995, the Association of German Architects since 1997 and honorary member of the American Institute of Architects since 1999.</text>
