<text>Ângelo Ramalheira was born on July 27, 1908, in Ílhavo. Son of João Ramalheira, he studied until the high school in Aveiro, Viana do Castelo and Lisbon. In the capital, he studied at the Colégio Francês and showed great skills in Mathematics. From there he went to Belgium, where, at the University of Ghent, he graduated in Civil Engineering with a specialization in reinforced concrete. Bringing technical knowledge from abroad, having been a student of Gustave Magnel, expert in reinforced concrete and pre-stressed construction techniques, engineer Ângelo Ramalheira was one of the main responsible for raising awareness of the engineer figure and his importance in collaborating with the purpose of creating large spaces with large span roofs, the building of terraces that characterized the pure cubic volumes that urban modernity at the time demanded.

Returning to Portugal, after graduation, he began to work in offices of competence, moving the attention of those around him by the exceptional practical sense revealed in solving problems. Construction began to seduce him and he was already a building engineer responsible for hard calculations, such as large yield blocks, multi-storey garages, and concert halls. One of his first works in Portugal was precisely the mythical headquarters of the newspaper “O Diário de Notícias”, on Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon. In this same work he deepened a friendship that would prove lasting with the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, author of the building project.

He left an extensive work portefolio, from the Instituto Português de Oncologia and Hospital de São João, true standards of civil construction, to the boldest constructions, such as the Companhia Industrial de Portugal e das Colónias, where sliding cellular molds were used, until speed disconcerting with the construction of the new Sports Pavillion of the Palácio de Cristal in Porto. Other important works of him, authentic marks of 20th century architecture and engineering, are the Ritz Hotel in Lisbon, the Atlantic Hotel in Cascais, the Cinearte and Monumental Theater in Lisbon, and the Cine-Avenida Theater in Aveiro. He was also a pioneer in the use of prestressed in Portugal, used for the first time in a structure of the Companhia Portuguesa de Siderurgia, in Leça do Balio.

In 1950, the Portuguese Government, at the invitation of the European Organization for Economic Cooperation (OECE), asked him to represent the country in the centenary of the United States Association of Civil Engineers. He wrote several scientific articles, namely about his works, such as “Cinearte, o novo cinema” in Revista Técnica. Angelo Ramalheira died on June 26, 1975.</text>

<text>Fernando Galvão Jacôme de Castro was born in Lisbon on August 6, 1892. He was a Portuguese engineer, having worked as a Public Works Inspector Engineer, as Director of National Buildings and Monuments and as Vice-President of the Administrative Commission of New University Facilities. He was also the engineer responsible for the works of the Faculdade de Letras, the Faculdade de Direito and the Reitoria da Universidade de Lisboa, witch, as a central element of the institution, received a distinctive architectural configuration from the Faculties, with an emphasis on the artistic decoration and the techniques used, which are in line with the spirit of grandeur intended. He was also the engineer responsible for other major works in the national context, such as Hospital de Santa Maria, Hospital Dona Estefânia and Escola Industrial e Comercial of Bragança.

He was also president of the Section of Economic Houses, one of the first initiatives of economic accommodation in Portugal. It was even in this program that the engineer launched Raúl Lino, defending to Duarte Pacheco, Minister of Works and Public and Communications, in 1934, that the architect was an expert in the rhetoric of the “Portuguese House”, a central issue for the years to come on the artistic representation of the dictatorship.

Still in life, he was awarded several decorations. The Degree of Grande-Oficial of Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, Oficial of Ordem Militar de Avis, Oficial of Ordem Militar de Santiago, Grande Oficial of Ordem Militar de Cristo and Comendador of Ordem da Instrução Pública. He also wrote some articles and works that remained for posterity, namely Algumas reflexões sobre o Ensino de Engenharia, on behalf of the National Electricity Company, with the collaboration of Fernando Ivo Gonçalves, Antonio Manuel Lebanon Monteiro, Carlos Portela, Diogo Almeida and Vasconcelos, Guido. dos Santos Rodrigues, José Augusto do Nascimento and José Maria de Quadros and Costa. Following his work at the head of the Economic Houses Section, he wrote Bairros Económicos. Fernando Galvão Jacôme de Castro died in Lisbon on June 13, 1964.</text>

His name is widely recognized at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), in Lisbon, where he was assistant from 1919 and full professor of Building Materials and Civil Constructions Subject from 1943 to 1962. The recruitment of full professors of civil engineering, since 1948, were made almost exclusively by public competition. Of the professors admitted after Bensaúde's withdrawal this one deserves special mention, mainly because of the professional activity developed outside the IST.

He is responsible for the writing of several articles, including Indicação geral e norma de cálculo da estrutura do novo Hospital Escolar de Lisboa, written in collaboration with Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal for the Revista da Ordem dos Engenheiros in 1944. <text>Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal was born in Chaves, in the Vila-Real district, on December 10, 1885. Son of Joaquim Maria Evangelista do Carvalhal and Maria do Carmo Carvalhal, he was an important Portuguese civil engineer. Among the projects that he intervened are the Faculdade de Letras, the Faculdade de Direito and the Reitoria of the Universidade de Lisboa, being him a member of the Administrative Commission of the New University Buildings. Also noteworthy are his interventions at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, where he did the study and calculation of the engineering project and construction contract, and at the Hospital de São João, in Porto.

However, one of his outstanding works is the fábrica de briquetes of Mina do Espadanal. The architectural and structural design of the factory was developed by the engineering office of Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal, similar to the design of volumes and elevations of the main body of the project of A Nacional factory, in Lisbon, by Pardal Monteiro, built almost simultaneously, between 1948 and 1952. This project is a unique work, due to its architectural quality and technological innovation in the construction of mining accessories in Portugal, whose uniqueness is due to the investment of important public economic and technical resources in the exploration of the Rio Maior lignite deposit as a strategic fuel reserve for the Lisbon region during World War II and post-war. The value of the architectural design of the fábrica de briquetes was recognized by the Order of Architects in inventing it in the Portuguese Architecture Survey of the 20th Century, held in 2006. Out of a total of 6112 nationally inventoried works, the Mina do Briquettes factory was one of 12 selected buildings in the municipality of Rio Maior.

He was a student at the Military College in Lisbon. One of the disciplines that pleased him most and became a hobby for the rest of his life was shooting. He was even awarded in several shooting events as alumno premiado. Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal died on August 4, 1972, at the age of 86, in Lisbon.</text>

In 1921, he graduated in civil engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), becoming, in the academic year 1920-1921, an assistant professor. It was not until 1942 that he came to the position of full professor. That same year he was elected director of the IST, a position he would hold until 1958. From that year he was vice-rector of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, where he remained until 1963. <text>Pedro Kopke Pardal Monteiro was born in 1920. He was son of Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, known architect of the twentieth century and one of the most important Portuguese modernists, and Maria Luísa Vasques Corrêa Pardal Monteiro. He studied civil engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), which he ended in 1944. He spent the early years of his professional career in Mozambique, where his father's architectural imprint is still evident today, such as the Maputo Cathedral and the Casa Hillman.

Some of his outstanding works are the new Fábrica de Massas e Bolachas of the Beato industrial complex, the Fábrica de Sêmolas, the Philips Industrial Complex, the Fábrica Portuguesa de Artigos Elétricos, the Ritz Hotel, the Fábrica A Nacional, the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge, the Edifício Arantes e Oliveira do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil.

In 1966, together with António Pardal Monteiro, he decided to set up first at Largo de São Carlos and later on Rua Saraiva de Carvalho a studio with the material of his father, Porfírio Pardal Monteiro. The Atelier had a tripartite management of these two family members and the architect and Anselmo Fernandez.

This same company is specialized, among others, in the construction of bridges. He was a National Expert on the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) and was part of the group that wrote the 1st version of the EuroCode of Concrete Bridges. He was also a member of the work group “Bridges” of the Fédération Internationale du Béton (FIB). He is a member of the Order of Engineers, the Academy of Engineering and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He was an Associate Member integrated in the Superior Council of Public Works and Transport.

He is also a guest speaker at national and international congresses and seminars. He has about 70 articles on bridges published in Portugal and abroad, including works published in international magazines, such as Construction des ponts sur le Rio Guadania et le Rio Arade au Portugal in 1993 with Fuzier and Câncio Martins, Le pont Vasco de Gama sur le Tage in 1998 with Vassord, Ello, Muller and Gausset, and Le pont sur l'Arade à Portimão en Algarve in 1993. In the awards field, in 1997 the Association Française pour la Construction (AFPC) awarded him its Annual Prize, in 2014 he received the Freyssinet Medal, in 2015 he received the Albert Caquot Prize and, finally, in 2009 the Associação Portuguesa para a Segurança e Conservação de Pontes (ASCP) awarded him its Gold Medal. Regarding the works in which he intervened, the I Ibero-American Biennial of Engineering and Architecture in 1998, awarded the Miguel Torga Bridge, in Régua, the 1st Engineering Prize and the II, in 2000, awarded the Vasco da Gama Bridge the 1st Engineering Award.
