Occupation Entrepreneur Engineer Biographical Text Pompeu Braga Soares Fortunato was a Portuguese businessman and engineer. He was one of the founders of the company "Moniz da Maia, Serra & Fortunato", future MSF. Nowadays the company is presided by his son Carlos Pompeu Fortunato. His and João Moniz da Maia’s company, the other founding partner, was one of the largest in the sector. He was also linked to the banking sector and, together with Moniz da Maia, they were the largest shareholders of BCP (Banco Comercial Português) at the time of its founding, with about 10% of the capital. In 1987, however, in what was the bank's first major shareholder crisis, they came out with a considerable profit, and their shares were largely bought by Américo Amorim. The departure of the two partners from MSF resulted in one of BCP's first lawsuits. His banking experience extended also to Banco Totta and a partnership with the Espírito Santo Group. Also, as an entrepreneur, Pompeu Fortunato was responsible for investments in the real estate sector in Benavente and in the tourism and services sector through the purchase of a stake in Tivoli Hotels.
