Profile

Soconstroi, Sociedade de Construções, S.A. was founded in 1983 by Engineer Godinho Lopes, that at the time was 30 years old, and Américo Santos. With seven partners, the company began its journey in a troubled period, as Portugal was in crisis and on the brink of an intervention by the IMF (International Monetary Fund). Godinho Lopes remained for fourteen years in charge of the company. Other names belong to the history and growth of this company, namely engineer Carlos Vidal, who joined in 1985, and together with Godinho Lopes bought the shares of the remaining partners, and Rui Pinto Baptista, a former colleague of the Godi-nho Lopes at the Instituto Superior Técnico that joined the company in 1988. Socons-troi's first works were mainly for the public sector, with entities such as CTT (Correios, Telégrafos e Telefones de Portugal), former TLP (Telefones de Lisboa e Porto), EDP (Energias de Portugal), and ANA (Aeroportos e Navegação Aérea de Portugal). Most of these works were the result of the great investment in the country, following Portugal's accession to the EEC. The first works were in the Lisbon Metro, followed by the Au-toeuropa factory in Palmela. In 1989 the French company Bouygues, also specialized in construction, became a partner of Soconstroi, having opened doors for a new list of works with CP (Comboios de Portugal). In 1993, upon leaving Bouygues, the company merged with A. Silva & Silva, renaming the company Assiconstroi. Finally, in 1997, the company was bought by Somague.
